I first became aware of Chuck when DaMac produced the first NFL posters in
1978. DaMac was a small company out of Jackson, TN and since Nashville was
considered the printing capitol of the world at that time, it was not unusual for the
company that did my printing to be selected to print the NFL posters.
DaMac had selected some of the top sports illustrators of the day and, because he
had done a Super Bowl cover for the NFL, a young illustrator living in Los
Angeles named Chuck Ren. Each artist was to create a poster for four of the
twenty-eight teams. The four teams that Chuck was given were the Los Angeles
Rams, Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco Forty-niners, and the Dallas Cowboys.
As I said earlier, DaMac and Gray Stone Press were using the same printer so
one day when I was working on a job at the printers; my rep said he would like
to show me a job they had just finished. They had just printed the posters for all
twenty-eight teams and he wanted to get my opinion of them. There were four
posters that were, just different. One had four mountain goats (rams) in the
background and they were the best I had ever seen anyone paint. The Bengal
Tiger in the Cincinnati poster was the best I'd ever seen and since wildlife
paintings were the fad of the day, I'd seen a lot of tigers. The football players
looked like photographs, only better.
I started looking for a signature on the ones I liked but couldn't find one. Finally,
my rep said "Is that a signature?" I looked where he pointed and sure enough,
there it was, plain as day (if you knew where to look for it), REN. And it was on
all four of the ones I liked.
I told my rep to get in touch with DaMac and get me a phone number or address
on who-ever this REN was. The next day he called me and said that the artist
was named Chuck Ren and he lived in Vista, California. He also gave me Chuck's
phone number.
