David Wright - The Landscape Era
In 1973 David was part of a group of six top illustrators and commercial
artists in the Nashville area known as "Studio Six". Signed and numbered,
limited edition prints were becoming very popular at that time and one of
the six artists decided to leave the group to start his own print publishing
company. Shortly thereafter, the remaining five artists got an opportunity
to start their own print publishing company; thus, "Gray Stone Press" was
born.
A local bank was planning the grand opening of their new facilities. They
wanted to have an art show and give each new depositor a limited edition
print. Each of the five artists was to create a painting from which the prints
would be produced. Since the bank felt that they would only need three
hundred of each, they didn't mind if the artists produced editions of
twenty-five hundred and sold the balance. The artists were then required
to be at the opening but the paintings would be on display and prints
given away for the following thirty days.
David had been to Cade's Cove National Park outside Gatlinburg, TN the
year before. At the entrance to the park sat an old wagon that reminded
him of the one his Grandfather had owned. He had taken several
photographs, thinking it would make a nice painting. The painting of the
wagon became his first "Limited Edition" print, "Wagon At Cade's Cove"
which is pictured below. For the next several years all of David's prints
would be landscapes...
