Little Bird Woman (an original painting) by David Wright
|
Even though David was having great success with his paintings of
western mountain men we decided that a print of an Indian woman might
be successful. We decided that a painting depicting "Sacajawea" should
be the first. I had read that one of the leading authorities on
"Sacajawea" had described her as having blue eyes and Caucasian
features. She also had to be very pretty. Now all we had to do was find
the model that fit the description. What we thought would be a very easy
task turned into a two and a half year search.
By this time most all our friends were on the look-out for a woman who
met our criteria. Our search came to an end when our friend Bill Golden
of "The Oak Ridge Boys" called David. "David, I think I've found
Sacajawea".
"The Oak Ridge Boys" were playing a show in Greenville, SC and Bill
saw Karen McCutcheon in the audience. Bill always had his camera with
him and arranged to photograph Karen after the show. When he
showed me the photographs he had taken, I immediately got on the
phone. Karen agreed to let us fly her to Nashville for a photo shoot.
Karen was probably one of the most photogenic people I've ever met.
David has used her photographs as reference for many paintings since
then. Both "Sacajawea" and "Waiting For Her Warrior" are paintings of
Karen.
