Chuck signed a contract with Gray Stone Press but, with a handshake,
acquired me as his business manager, an arrangement that lasted sixteen
years.
Chuck's Dallas Cowboys poster sold over seventy-five thousand and his
four posters outsold the other twenty-four team posters put together. This
prompted DaMac to want Chuck to create posters for the other twenty-four
teams. They contacted Chuck and he contacted me. When Chuck did the
first four, DaMac had paid him a flat fee and got to keep the original art.
This was the way it was done in those days. I believe that the owner of "The
Saturday Post" had between ten and twenty Norman Rockwell originals that
they had got as illustrations for their magazine covers.
It was my contention that DaMac only needed the artwork for the purpose of
producing a poster. I advised Chuck to sell them a one-time use-rights
agreement and keep the original artwork. I also told him to ask for more
money. With the success of Chuck's first four posters, I felt DaMac would
be happy to do it. Chuck didn't really believe they would agree to it but he
followed my advice and was surprised at how fast DaMac signed the
contract.
Over a period of years Chuck created posters for all twenty-eight teams
three times and did three Super Bowl covers for the NFL. He also created
posters for the World Football League, The NBA, USFL and numerous
college sports programs.
